If you’ve been looking for an excuse to dive back into the cosy, brilliantly animated cosmos of Star Birds, your time has officially come. Berlin-based indie studio Toukana Interactive (the masterminds behind Dorfromantik) and the beloved science animation studio kurzgesagt – in a nutshell have officially dropped the “Lava & Logistics” Update.
This isn’t just any regular patch—it marks the game’s final major content update before it leaves Early Access for its highly anticipated full 1.0 release.
Here is everything you need to know about the fiery new features, optimised controls, and expanded platforms hitting the asteroid-mining simulator.
Welcome to Cinnakeet: Things are Getting Hot
The headline of this update is the introduction of a brand-new star system called Cinnakeet. Set around a massive hypergiant star, Cinnakeet brings three intense new levels that will fundamentally change how you build your space factories.
Forget the cosy, predictable rocks of the past. Cinnakeet introduces lava pools on the asteroid surfaces, forcing players to rethink their 360° base-building strategies. Space is at a premium, and the blistering heat means your production networks will now require dedicated cooling systems to prevent catastrophic overheating.
To help you combat the elements, the update introduces eight new buildings, including:
- The Geothermal Reactor: Turn that hazardous lava heat into a massive energy source for your base.
- The Resource Filter Building: Easily one of the community’s most highly requested features, giving you precise, granular control over resource flows as your factory scales up.
You’ll also find seven new resources, eight hidden resources with secret crafting recipes, and fresh, beautifully animated kurzgesagt cutscenes. Keep an eye out for the Star Map for the new Alien Trader, who arrives speaking a custom-designed alien language!
Sandbox Freedom: Expanded Free Play Mode
For the pioneers who prefer to build without the boundaries of the main story campaign, the Free Play Mode has received a massive overhaul.
You can now jump into a fully flexible sandbox experience with individually generated levels tailored to your exact difficulty and environmental preferences. Toukana has also integrated in-game leaderboards accessible directly from the main menu, allowing you to compare your factory efficiency and high scores against the best Star Birds players across the globe.
Mac Support and Full Controller Integration
Up until now, Star Birds has been a Windows-exclusive affair. The “Lava & Logistics” update officially smashes those barriers by introducing a native Mac port (optimised for Apple Silicon M1 chips and newer).
Furthermore, the game now features full controller support. This is massive news for handheld gamers, as the game is now officially optimised for the Steam Deck. Toukana has added smooth 3D cursor navigation for asteroid viewing, building placement, and pipe drawing, alongside quick-access radial menus and D-pad shortcuts to make playing from the couch feel incredibly intuitive.
TechMash Verdict: Star Birds has always been a masterful blend of Dorfromantik’s cozy puzzle design and kurzgesagt’s witty, scientifically curious aesthetic. With the “Lava & Logistics” update solving major QoL requests, expanding to Mac, and adding rich endgame content, the stage is perfectly set for a stellar full launch.
The Star Birds “Lava & Logistics” update is live right now on Steam. If you haven’t picked it up yet, the base game is currently running a 25% discount until June 9, making it the perfect time to join the flock before the price hikes for the full 1.0 release.
