The year is September 1914. The rapid manoeuvres of late summer have evaporated, replaced by a grim reality that no one saw coming. The “War of Movement” has died in the face of machine-gun fire and heavy artillery. From the Swiss border to the North Sea, the race is over. The lines are drawn.
Now, there is only one thing left to do: Dig.
Vitar Games has just unveiled Dig In, a brutal and methodical WWI Trench Warfare Colony Sim that tasks you with surviving the transition from mobile warfare to the agonising stagnation of the Western Front.
Hold the Line, Build the Future
In Dig In, you aren’t just a general moving units on a map; you are the architect of a subterranean city. Your sector is your responsibility, and as the autumn rains begin to turn the French countryside into a quagmire, your enemies are just as likely to be trench foot and dysentery as they are the opposing army.
Key Gameplay Features:
- Complex Trench Architecture: Design intricate systems of fire trenches, communication lines, and saps. Proper drainage isn’t just a luxury—it’s the difference between a functional squad and a flooded grave.
- Morale & Logistics: Manage the psychological toll on your men. Ensure the “rum ration” arrives on time, letters from home are delivered, and the duckboards are kept above the water line.
- The Technology Gap: It’s 1914. Tanks are a fever dream and planes are for scouting. You rely on bolt-action rifles, primitive grenades, and the sheer grit of your men.
- Dynamic Fog of War: Use periscopes and night raids to peek into “No Man’s Land.” The enemy is often only 50 yards away, yet they remain a terrifying mystery until the whistles blow.
A New Breed of Colony Sim
What sets Dig In apart from your standard base-builder is the sense of claustrophobia. Resources are finite, and the world above the parapet is certain death. You must balance the need for better fortifications with the constant demand from High Command to launch “minor” sorties that rarely result in anything but a casualty list.
“We wanted to capture that specific moment in September 1914 where the world realized the war wouldn’t be over by Christmas,” says the lead dev at Vitar Games. “It’s about the ingenuity born of desperation.”
Will You Survive the Winter?
As the leaves turn and the first frosts hit the Oise and the Aisne, your leadership will be pushed to the limit. Can you keep your men warm, fed, and ready for the inevitable counter-attack? Or will your sector become just another nameless stretch of mud in the history books?
Dig In is available now for early access. Grab your shovel, keep your head down, and remember: The shovel is just as important as the rifle.
