If you miss the days of commanding pixelated battalions on your handheld, there’s a new reason to get excited. Vaporwave Studios, a fledgling indie team based in the Midwestern US, has officially pulled the curtain back on their debut commercial project: Tyrant Tactics: Birth of Revolution.
The game’s Steam Page is now live, marking a major milestone for the studio as they look to revive and reinvent the classic turn-based tactical genre.
A Modern Spin on Retro Warfare
At first glance, Tyrant Tactics wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Reminiscent of classics like Advance Wars and Super Robot Wars, the game features vibrant pixel art and grid-based combat. However, Vaporwave Studios isn’t just looking to copy the past; they’re aiming to modernise the pacing and depth of the genre.
Key features include:
- The “Tyrants”: Massive mechs that act as the centrepiece of your army, shifting the traditional unit dynamics.
- Resource Management: A fixed resource system designed to speed up gameplay—once your reserves are spent, it’s game over.
- Massive Variety: Command 28 different units across land, sea, air, and even outer space.
- A Deep Campaign: Over 20 levels of narrative-driven revolution set in the year 2088AD.
Multiplayer and Playtests
For those who prefer testing their mettle against friends, the game supports up to 4-player multiplayer, featuring both local and online play. Whether you want to lead the United Nations of Earth or join the revolutionary forces, the tactical possibilities appear vast.
“As fans of both modern and retro games, we’re working to create projects that players will flock to, whether it’s for unique narrative experiences or engaging gameplay styles.” — Vaporwave Studios
What’s Next?
While a firm release date hasn’t been set, the studio is aiming for a public playtest by the end of Summer 2026. If you want to get your hands on those mechs early, your best bet is to head over to Steam and add it to your wishlist.
