Feel the Need for Speed: Battlefield 6’s Explosive Top Gun Update Flies In This August 18

Get ready to strap in, double-check your flight inverted toggles, and cue the Harold Faltermeyer anthem! The wait is almost over for virtual aviators and ground-pounders alike.

Phase 2 of Battlefield 6 Season 4 is officially launching on August 18, bringing a legendary crossover with Paramount’s iconic Top Gun franchise. Whether you’ve spent hundreds of hours mastering dogfights or you’re looking to jump into carrier-based warfare for the very first time, this high-octane update is taking combat to all-new heights across the Pacific.

Here is everything you need to know about how EA and DICE are bringing the ultimate high-speed aerial experience to Battlefield 6.

Two-Seater Jets Are Back in the Danger Zone

For the first time in over two decades, fixed-wing two-seater fighter jets make their glorious return to the franchise.

Pilots can take to the skies alongside a dedicated back-seater in two brand-new jets: the F/A-81F Super Spectre and the F-74A Seacat (inspired by modern military powerhouses like the F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-14 Tomcat). Grab a squadmate to act as your RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) to spot targets, drop countermeasures, and clear enemy airspace together.

For newcomers worried about taking off, a new Aeroplane Control Assist toggle will help greenhorn pilots get comfortable manoeuvring in dogfights without nose-diving straight into the ocean.

Legendary Battlefields: Wake Island Reborn

It wouldn’t be a classic Pacific-theatre update without one of the most iconic maps in gaming history.

Wake Island is back, completely rebuilt and reimagined around Battlefield 6’s modern Sandbox. With massive aircraft carriers anchoring each side of the horseshoe-shaped island, the battle expands across land, air, and sea. Expect chaotic beachfront amphibious assaults, high-altitude dogfights, and bunker-to-bunker infantry shootouts.

Additionally, the battle royale mode REDSEC gains a new High Value Zone at Fort Lyndon: the USS Grant, a crashed carrier packed with high-tier loot.

New Game Modes: Carrier Strike & Fighter Sweep

The Top Gun update isn’t just about extra hardware; it redefines how you play:

  • Carrier Strike: The ultimate test of combined-arms warfare. Fight across the Pacific to capture objective sectors, deploy naval and air assets, and punch a hole through the enemy fleet to infiltrate and destroy their aircraft carrier from the inside out.
  • Gauntlet – Fighter Sweep: Pure aerial chaos. Squads take to the sky to hunt down enemy jets, execute tactical manoeuvres, and destroy enemy supply stockpiles to climb the leaderboard.

Voice Work from Top Gun: Maverick Royalty

This collaboration isn’t just cosmetic—it brings iconic star power right into your headset. Fully voiced Operator skins and cosmetics for three Top Gun: Maverick fan favourites will drop during the event:

  • Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (voiced by Miles Teller)
  • Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd (voiced by Lewis Pullman)
  • Adm. Solomon “Warlock” Bates (voiced by Charles Parnell)

New Firepower & Quality-of-Life Gear

If you prefer boots on the ground, the update brings fresh gear to play with. You can unlock the Interdictor, Battlefield 6’s longest-range sniper rifle yet, through the event Battle Pass to pick off target pilots at long range.

EA is also introducing an optional ADS Dispersion Crosshair to give players clear visual feedback on how sustained fire and movement affect recoil and accuracy—perfect for dialling in your burst control during intense firefights.

Ready for Takeoff?

With two-seat jet dogfights, the return of Wake Island, and heavy carrier combat, the Top Gun update looks set to deliver some of the biggest cinematic sandbox moments in Battlefield 6 history.

Clear your schedule for August 18, grab your favourite wingman, and get ready to dominate the Pacific skies!
