Action RPG fans, take note. Publisher 4Divinity and developer Sword Panda Limited have officially dropped a stunning brand-new gameplay and story trailer for their highly anticipated title, Sword Sage: Awakening.

Rooted deeply in Chinese mythology, folklore, and a fascinating splash of sci-fi tech, this upcoming title looks set to bring a beautifully distinctive flavour to the hack-and-slash genre.

Facing the Weight of an Ancient Mistake

The newly released trailer places players firmly in the shoes of Pei Sanniang (San Niang), a novice disciple of the Yuangong Sect. San Niang carries a staggering burden: she must confront the devastating, thousand-year-old fallout of an ancient catastrophe.

A millennium ago, the drunken Supreme White Gibbon Sage unburied and leaked forbidden celestial books to mankind. This forbidden divine knowledge shattered the delicate cosmic balance between Earth and the spirit world. Instead of enlightenment, the world of Jiannandao was plunged into relentless natural disasters, corruption, and an infestation of deadly demons known as Yaoguai.

However, humanity didn’t just give up. To survive the onslaught, the people of Jiannandao adapted, forging advanced mechanical wonders and “amber-punk” technologies to push back against the supernatural threats.

High-Octane Combat: Blending Taoism and Blade-Work

The gameplay footage showcases a fluid, high-speed combat system that beautifully balances traditional martial arts with high-fantasy magical abilities. As a rookie Yaoguai Vanquisher, San Niang has an impressive arsenal at her disposal:

• Traditional Swordsmanship: Fluid blade-work that seamlessly blends soft, defensive deflections with heavy, punishing physical strikes.
• The Secret Technique: Master the unique Yuangong Sect combat mechanic, “Evade Cyan, Strike Red,” to systematically dismantle supernatural threats.
• Taoist Spells & Artefacts: Unleash powerful elemental spells, heavy leg attacks, and mystical celestial artefacts to purify enemies corrupted by the forbidden texts.

The developers—a talented team at Sword Panda Limited composed of ex-Ubisoft veterans—are pitching the game as a “road-movie odyssey where Chinese mythology meets Sci-Fi.” Between the gorgeous folkloric art style and the fast-paced action mechanics, it’s shaping up to be a true standout.
