Through the snow-blasted wastes, one thing moves. One thing survives. Frostrail — the brutal co-op survival FPS from Barotrauma developer FakeFish and publisher Shiro Unlimited — is pulling into Steam Next Fest, with a full public demo running October 19–26, 2026 on Steam.
From the creators of the acclaimed underwater survival sensation Barotrauma comes a new nightmare — this time above the waves, where the cold kills faster than any beast.
The World Freezes. Your Train Endures.
The empire is gone. A pact with the Void has scoured the land, leaving endless ice, creeping horror, and silence broken only by the howl of the wind — and the chug of your engine. As one of the Penitent Gardeners, you and your crew roam aboard an armoured steam train: your home, your fortress, your only lifeline.
- Your train is everything — fuel the mighty Eden Engine, manage power across systems, and keep it moving. Upgrade carriages, mount weapon stations, reinforce hull plating, and turn your locomotive into a rolling stronghold
- Scavenge or starve — venture out into the frozen ruins to gather supplies, salvage scrap, and hunt for fuel. But every step away from the fire is dangerous. The frost saps your warmth, blizzards blind you, and something ancient stalks the dark
- Fight the unseen — revenants, corrupted creatures, and eldritch horrors haunt the wastes. Craft weapons, stand together, and defend your train when they close in. Fall alone — or stand and burn as one
- Solo or 4-player co-op — brave the wasteland entirely on your own, or gather up to three allies to share the watch, split duties, and survive the worst together
Built On Experience — A New Kind of Survival
FakeFish earned its reputation with Barotrauma, a game where the deadliest dangers were often the crew itself — and that same DNA runs through Frostrail. Every system matters: engine pressure, heat levels, resource stockpiles, and defensive readiness. In co-op, roles split naturally — someone stokes the furnace, someone scouts ahead, someone stands watch — and communication is the difference between reaching the next station and freezing in the drift.
“We want to give survivors a real sense of being stranded and fighting back,” said Ez Jämsen, Lead Designer at FakeFish. “The train isn’t just a vehicle — it’s your last safe place in a world that’s forgotten how to be kind.”
What The Demo Delivers
The Steam Next Fest preview offers a substantial slice of the experience:
- A stretch of frozen wasteland to explore, complete with distinct biomes and ruined settlements
- Full train operation and basic upgrading — feel the weight of the controls and the reward of improvement
- Encounters with the wasteland’s dangers — from biting cold to creeping things
- A taste of the progression loop: scavenge, craft, reinforce, push deeper
The Road Ahead
Frostrail is targeting an Early Access launch in Q4 2026, with roughly a year planned in that phase to expand biomes, deepen crafting and combat, and refine co-op dynamics alongside the community. The price will rise alongside added content — making Early Access the most affordable time to board.
